Plans to close two television channels and one radio station form part of a cost-reduction programme at the BBC, with the broadcaster targeting £500 million in savings across a two-year period. Between 1,800 and 2,000 positions are expected to be cut, according to BBC reporting.
Plans to trim expenditure at the BBC include closing both BBC Three and BBC Scotland as television channels by spring, with each service transitioning to an online-only format. Radio 4 Extra, a station devoted to speech-based content drawn from the organisation's archive holdings, is among the services set to close.
Redundancies affecting roughly 550 positions in news operations and a further 30 or so in BBC Sport had been disclosed by the broadcaster beforehand. A further £5.5 million in savings has been put forward by Rachel Jupp since taking the helm at BBC News, a package that carries the potential loss of roughly 100 posts.
Programmes removed from the broadcaster's schedule over recent weeks include RuPaul's Drag Race UK, Blankety Blank, Celebrity Mastermind, Live at the Apollo, Football Focus, and Ski Sunday — a set of withdrawals the organisation has now formally confirmed. A handful of shows — DIY SOS among them — have been taken off air on a provisional basis.
The BBC's director-general, Matt Brittin, described the restructuring as a necessary response to financial pressures and shifts in how audiences consume content, adding in a statement that every pound of funding needed to stretch further as the organisation addressed immediate budgetary demands and repositioned itself for an evolving media landscape. Brittin noted that difficult decisions would inevitably follow from that reality.
Viewers in Scotland will retain access to BBC Scotland content through BBC iPlayer, with a portion of that output also scheduled to broadcast across BBC One and BBC Two north of the border. Commissioning fresh material for iPlayer, YouTube, and other platforms remains part of BBC Three's remit, a channel whose output has long been shaped around the tastes and interests of younger viewers.
A shift to digital distribution arrived for the channel in 2016, with a return to broadcast television following six years later. Arriving on Scottish screens in 2019, the BBC's dedicated television channel brought together news, sport, documentaries, and entertainment under one regional broadcast home. A large portion of that content is set to remain accessible in digital form once the doors close.
Brittin indicated that viewers and listeners would retain access to a substantial portion of the programming those three services currently offer, with much of it remaining available through iPlayer and Sounds, where audiences already tune in.
BBC Radio 4 Extra draws heavily on archived speech programming, and that channel is listed among those scheduled to close under the restructuring plan. Listeners will still be able to access its content through BBC Sounds. Listeners tuning in through BBC Sounds or local radio stations will still find The Daily Service among the available programming.
Shutting down the channel would put a number of BBC Scotland's current productions at risk as well. No digital migration to BBC iPlayer is planned for Reporting Scotland: News at Seven — the channel's main evening news programme — which is instead expected to end entirely when the linear television service closes. Scottish news and current affairs coverage will remain part of the BBC's output through a range of other formats, among them Reporting Scotland, The Sunday Show, Radio Scotland Breakfast, Debate Night, and Scotcast.
During daytime hours, BBC Scotland's television channel carries BBC Radio Scotland as a simulcast, reserving its own programming for evening slots.
The BBC's yearly report, released earlier this year, set out that the broadcaster's existing funding arrangements fall short of what its public service remit demands over the long term. Facing what it described as considerable strain on its finances, the BBC outlined plans to trim roughly one-tenth of its overall spending by 2029. Planned reductions are concentrated in the fiscal year opening on 1 April 2027.
Factors weighing on the BBC's finances — among them inflationary pressure, a diversion of licence fee income, and climbing production expenditure — were outlined by a broadcaster widely regarded for its journalistic standards. Founded as a radio service in 1922 with a remit spanning public information, education, and entertainment, the BBC today operates across 15 nationally and regionally focused television channels in the UK, alongside several international broadcast outlets, ten national radio stations, an extensive network of local radio services, the globally distributed World Service, and a digital portfolio anchored by the iPlayer streaming platform.
