A haul of 85 medals — 21 gold, 27 silver, and 37 bronze — placed India fourth on the continental table when the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya drew to a close. The Japan tally came in under the 106 medals recorded at the 2023 Hangzhou Games, yet the competition there produced a run of athletes claiming titles for the first time and achievements with no prior entry in the record books.
Nine sports yielded gold medals for India at the competition, with archery alone responsible for five of those titles and the team disciplines of cricket, hockey, and kabaddi together accounting for the remaining four. Three golds came from the shooting disciplines, one from athletics, three from boxing, two from wrestling, and a further one from golf.
Eight of India's Hangzhou gold medals had a direct equivalent in the Japan competition, while the remaining 13 top-of-the-podium finishes at that event were won in disciplines where no such prior title had been claimed.
A gold medal for the women's 4x400m relay squad stood as athletics' sole contribution to India's tally at the top of the podium. Four athletes — Kiran Pahal, M.R. Poovamma, Prachi Choudhary, and Vithya Ramraj — pooled their efforts to secure the relay title.
In the 10m air pistol mixed team event, Kamaljeet and Suruchi Singh delivered the first gold medal of the shooting campaign for India, claiming top honours on the range together. In women's trap shooting at the Games, Neeru Dhanda posted a performance that stood among the more notable individual contributions from the Indian contingent.
The gold medal she captured in women's trap brought to a close a 48-year stretch without an individual Asian Games trap title for India, a gap that had stretched back to Randhir Singh's victory in 1978. In the mixed team trap event, Neeru Dhanda and Kynan Chenai claimed the top position on the podium, taking home gold. Hitting 34 of 40 targets — a new Asian record — the pair secured a gold medal for India in the trap mixed team event, a title the country had not previously held at the Asian Games.
At the Asian Games, India's women's kabaddi squad took back the gold, recapturing a title the side had previously held. India's kabaddi programme claimed victories in both the men's and women's competitions at Aichi-Nagoya, with the men's side securing the second of those two titles.
After 44 years without gold at the Asian Games, the women's hockey side claimed the top spot on the podium. A gold-medal defence concluded with a victory over Malaysia in the final, keeping the men's title in the same hands. The victory also represented the first time a men's hockey side had retained the Asian Games title on behalf of India, while both squads locked in their places at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics through the result.
Gold in the women's T20 cricket event went to India's squad at the conclusion of the competition. A T20 title added to the men's squad's trophy haul, rounding out a cricket double for the side.
Three Indian archers — Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Prithika Pradeep, and Chikitha Taniparthi — combined in the women's compound team event to deliver the country's opening archery gold at these Games. Taniparthi and Sahil Jadhav combined to claim the mixed compound team crown, with Chikitha Taniparthi partnering Jadhav across the paired-discipline event. Jadhav, Dalal, and Thirumuru combined to claim gold for India in the compound archery team discipline for men.
Ankita Bhakat, Kirti Sharma, and Kumkum Anil Mohod combined in the women's recurve team event to claim a gold medal for India at the Asian Games — the country's first in that discipline — ending a run of South Korean dominance in the title stretching back 28 years. Competing in the women's individual recurve discipline at the Asian Games, Kumkum Anil Mohod claimed a gold medal — the first of its kind for India in that event.
At the 75kg weight class, Borgohain claimed the Asian Games boxing title for women, placing her alongside Mary Kom as one of only two Indian women to have stood atop that particular podium with a gold medal. In the 65kg division, a gold medal in women's boxing went to Parveen Hooda, extending her tally of titles at the top of that weight class. In the 75kg division for men, Panghal secured the top position on the podium for Ankush.
At the Asian Games, Aman Sehrawat captured gold in the 57kg freestyle wrestling event for men, a result that placed him in the record books as the first competitor from India to claim that top honour in the weight category. At the 65kg freestyle wrestling event for men, Kalkal claimed the gold medal — the first time India had taken the top podium step in Asian Games wrestling since 2018.
Pranavi Urs secured the women's individual golf title at the Asian Games, a result that placed India on the continental podium in that discipline for the first time at the gold-medal level.
