Andy Burnham Opens Door to Brexit Reversal in Future Labour Manifesto While Prioritising EU Trade Reset

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has not ruled out placing Brexit reversal in Labour's next election manifesto, though he stated his present focus is on advancing UK-EU trade relations and securing a bilateral summit. He acknowledged internal concerns over the bloc's 'made in Europe' legislation and its potential impact on British industry. Burnham is also set to address democratic resilience in a speech at the UN General Assembly.

A number of ministers have reportedly raised concerns in private that progress on the UK-EU rapprochement has lost momentum under Burnham's premiership, with a proposed summit on the issue now at risk of further delay unless the bloc agrees to begin negotiations on legislation that could limit access for British businesses to certain EU industrial sectors. Reaching tangible trade and economic agreements remains the stated objective at this stage. Burnham noted that the UK had gathered considerable support from EU member states for its position on the "made in Europe" legislation, which he argued posed a threat to the ongoing reset process, and that both the UK and Europe faced similar consequences alongside other countries, particularly in the steel industry, meaning Europe's dispute was not directed at the UK; he also contended that the legislation was dealing with a distinct matter rather than targeting the UK as an opponent, while drawing attention to the vulnerability of UK-Ireland supply chains should relations with the EU deteriorate, and proposing a trusted partner arrangement that would prevent new obstacles from arising in areas where no friction had previously existed and where the interests of both sides converged. Speaking at the UN on Tuesday to mark ten years since Brexit, Burnham is anticipated to urge the UK to reassess the weaknesses within its democratic institutions, pointing to how periods of political turbulence have left the country open to attempts by outside parties to interfere with and manipulate information about the British electoral process. Speaking to journalists on board his aircraft, he called for increased openness around efforts by overseas adversaries to influence public opinion in ways that benefited those actors rather than the nation as a whole.
