Alberta Separation Would Cost Up to $170 Billion and Require 70,000 New Civil Servants, Report Finds
A report commissioned by the Alberta government and produced by the University of Calgary's School of Public Policy estimates that separating from Canada would cost the province between $50 billion and $170 billion, while requiring the hiring of approximately 70,000 new civil servants. The report warns of profound economic disruption, including an annual budget deficit exceeding $30 billion. Alberta's Finance Minister cited the findings in reaffirming the government's support for remaining in Canada ahead of the October 19 referendum.
