Akhilesh Yadav Launches PDA Rath Yatra from Rae Bareli Ahead of 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav launched his PDA Rath Yatra from Rae Bareli on Thursday, formally beginning his party's campaign for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. He framed the contest as PDA vs BJP, raised allegations related to governance, the Ram temple in Ayodhya, the Election Commission, and the death of Vinod Kumar Sahni in Gonda. Congress leaders also responded to the event, highlighting the political dynamics between the two alliance partners ahead of the state polls.

Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav arrived in Rae Bareli on Thursday aboard a specially designed PDA chariot to launch his PDA Rath Yatra, a campaign he has positioned ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Rae Bareli, the parliamentary constituency represented by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, drew attention from political analysts after Akhilesh selected it as the starting point for his campaign. He asserted that the electoral contest between PDA and BJP had been decided in advance, and that the BJP would suffer a lasting loss in 2027. He argued that the BJP resorts to administratively shielded manoeuvres whenever the party experiences a downturn at the ballot box. Yadav claimed that the PDA had built broad support throughout the state, and that electoral participation would offset what he characterised as the BJP's deployment of bulldozers. He claimed that the BJP had been defeated in the 2024 elections and that his party aimed to eliminate it from political competition altogether by 2027, with the SP also planning to work towards reducing discrimination throughout society. He additionally claimed that the BJP had brought demolition equipment into Kashi, resulting in damage to temples, and vowed that his party would work toward building a nation grounded in the values of unity. Akhilesh Yadav raised claims of theft from the donation funds held at the Ayodhya Ram temple. He raised questions with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath about reported financial irregularities involving donations to the Ram temple, a place of profound religious importance to its devotees. The SP chief also alleged that the Election Commission had tampered with vote tallies, and expressed a loss of trust in the body. He claimed that the Samajwadi Party would have won control of Uttar Pradesh if the 2022 state assembly polls had been conducted without irregularities. Fisheries Minister Sanjay Nishad stood alongside the family of Vinod Kumar Sahni — a 45-year-old utensil trader from Gonda who died in hospital after sustaining injuries in a knife attack on 9 September — at a protest held outside KGMU, where those gathered demanded accountability from the police officers implicated in the matter. The Rath Yatra, setting out from Rae Bareli, is taking place as Uttar Pradesh prepares for its 2027 assembly elections.
