AIMIM Explores Pre-Poll Alliance with BSP in Uttar Pradesh Ahead of 2027 Assembly Elections

AIMIM, led by Asaduddin Owaisi, is in talks with the BSP for a pre-poll alliance in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections after outreach to the SP did not produce positive results. AIMIM UP chief Shaukat Ali confirmed alliance discussions are ongoing but declined to name the parties involved. The party is also preparing to contest up to 200 seats if no alliance is reached. The SP has ruled out AIMIM's inclusion, with its spokesperson stating the party is not part of the INDIA bloc. Political analysts note that AIMIM's electoral presence presents a complex set of considerations for opposition parties in the state.

Owaisi has repeatedly argued that the parties accusing AIMIM of acting as a BJP proxy are the same ones that block his organisation from joining opposition alliances when it seeks to do so. Ali indicated that the party would move forward with the arrangement if the other side expressed interest, while also preparing to field candidates in roughly 200 constituencies on its own in the event that no alliance materialises, with ultimate authority over those decisions resting with senior leadership. Singh argued that the group should be excluded from the alliance in UP. The document claimed that AIMIM puts forward candidates in constituencies where opposition parties are running against the BJP. The SP leader proceeded to assert the party's strength in Uttar Pradesh, citing its performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as supporting evidence.
